◆ The Favorite Blinked
We said back Scheffler until someone gives you a reason not to. Thursday gave a small one: a two-over 72, and a tie for 44th. Meanwhile the top of the board is a five-way logjam at six under, and it’s a legit one — built tee-to-green, exactly what a course with no tricks to hide behind should produce.

◆ The Scheffler Watch
A 72 from the world’s best is a surprise, not a verdict. One flat round against a season of elite ball-striking reads as noise, not a trend — the model doesn’t flinch on a single 18. But it’s the number to watch Friday: shrug off one, and he’s fine; back it up with a second, and the “deserved favorite” label starts to wobble. For now, we’re watching, not fading.
◆ How Our Card Played
The bounce-back call is half-landing. We flagged Matt Fitzpatrick and Collin Morikawa as the pure iron players a blank-slate venue would set free. Fitzpatrick delivered — T6, legit, irons humming. Morikawa was quieter at even-adjacent (T21). The angle is alive, not yet proven.
The cleanest proof of the week’s thesis, though, is Rory McIlroy. He was among the coldest names last week, when the course demanded a fit he didn’t have. Drop him at a venue with no test to fail and the ball-striking showed up on hole one — a legit −6. No fit to fail cuts both ways: it also rescues the players a fussier course had buried.
◆ The Bubble Bulldozer
The best story on the top-30 line is at the very top of the leaderboard. Gary Woodland — our pre-tournament “first man out” — opened with the best ball-striking round in the field and now co-leads. Hold anything close and he bulldozes into East Lake from outside.
◆ Rickie Fowler still sits exactly on the #30 line — no cushion, striking it well enough to hold.
◆ Jake Knapp, the charger we flagged from outside, has nudged just inside the cut. The live movers are moving.

◆ The Line for Moving Day
The board is legit and the favorite is human — watch whether Scheffler answers with a low one, ride Fitzpatrick and the striking leaders, and keep an eye on Woodland turning a bubble into a breakaway. Nobody’s buried after 18; a lot gets decided over the next.
